Installing Oracle

If you have been reading this book sequentially, you have now learned quite a bit about the basic concepts
of the Oracle database, along with a few tips and techniques you can use as a developer accessing
the Oracle database. Now it’s time to install the Oracle software so you can do the hands-on work in
the rest of the book.
This chapter covers the installation of Oracle 10g Database. The installation procedure was one of
the areas that was significantly improved in the Oracle 10g release from earlier releases, so the
following description will also help to display some of the advantages that the 10g release brought
to the Oracle arena.
If you already have a running Oracle database, you may not need to read the remainder of this
chapter. However, it may be worthwhile, since you may have to install a version of Oracle 10g for
testing purposes.
Getting Oracle Software
For the purpose of completeness, this chapter will assume you don’t even have Oracle software.
You can download a copy of Oracle 10g Database standard edition from the Oracle Technology
Network at http://otn.oracle.com.
Oracle Technology Network, commonly referred to as OTN, is an incredibly useful site for anyone
using Oracle technology, full of articles, official and extended documentation, and discussion
boards. It doesn’t cost anything to register for OTN, although you may want to purchase a
TechTrack for $199. A TechTrack, as of this writing, provides a suite of software for development
use as well as access to online technical support information.
The version of the Oracle database you will download is free, but you can only use if internally for
development, as detailed in the OTN License Agreement that is presented during the download
process. If you wish to deploy the software, you have to obtain a license from Oracle for the particular
deployment scenario.
The home page of OTN (at the time that this process was being documented) is shown in Figure 7-1. The
content of the home page changes regularly, but the basic areas typically remain the same. The fastest way to get to the download area for an OTN product is to scroll to the bottom of the page
and click on the product center, which is on the far left. The home page for the database product center is
shown in Figure 7-2.
The left-hand navigation area contains an entry for downloads. Click on this entry to get a list of downloads,
and then select Database from the list. This action brings up a page with downloads for Oracle Database 10g
for a number of platforms, including Windows and Linux.
Once you select one of the downloads, you will be asked to sign in, either give or verify some of your
contact information, answer some survey questions, and certify that you will not use the software for
forbidden foreign export—a small price to pay for downloading Oracle Database 10g. You will also see
the particulars of the OTN License Agreement here, which you must agree to by clicking on the button
labeled I Accept before you can begin a download. Of course, this free download will not allow you to
use Oracle technical support.SapereOnLine
